Fifteen years of "put it in the cloud"
For fifteen years the answer to every infrastructure question was the same: put it in the cloud. Edge computing is the admission that some things need to happen within a few milliseconds of the person, the sensor or the car, and a data centre four hundred miles away cannot manage that.
The boring, important shape of it
The practical shape of it is boring and important: small pieces of code running in hundreds of locations, kept in sync by the same tools that already run the big ones. Developers mostly do not notice, which is the point.
What becomes possible
What changes is what becomes possible. Live translation, real-time video effects, factory floors that react in a heartbeat. None of it is science fiction; all of it needs the compute to be nearby.
